Viagra (sildenafil) is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. Viagra increases the body's ability to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation. Viagra is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Viagra - Side Effects

The commoner side effects of Viagra are altered vision (blue tint or haze), congested sinuses, or dry eyes. These occur in only about 3% of the patients. Other possible side effects are flushing, headache, indigestion, light sensitivity, rash, and inability to tell between blue and green. While these uncommon responses to Viagra may not be dangerous, consult a doctor as soon as posisble, and avoid further use of Viagra until you have your doctor's approval. The following serious side effects are very rare: arrhythmia, blood sugar problems (in patients with history of diabetes), decreased blood flow to the heart, heart attack, priapism (prolonged and painful erection), seizures, swelling or redness of the eyes, or temporary blindness. If you experience any of these, seek emergency medical attention.

Viagra has been proven safe for use in most adult men and is generally well-received. However, like many medications, Viagra is not a suitable treatment for all individuals. Certain combination of Viagra with other drugs may be very dangerous; do not take any medication in conjunction with Viagra without first consulting your doctor. Before having any procedure or surgery, including dental surgery, tell the staff you are taking Viagra. Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had a bleeding disorder; heart, kidney, or liver disease; a heart attack; irregular heartbeats; angina; a stroke; high or low blood pressure; sickle cell anemia; multiple myeloma; leukemia; conditions affecting the shape of the penis (such as angulation or Peyronie's disease); or the condition known as retinitis pigmentosa.

Viagra - Proper Usage

Take by mouth about 60 minutes before you plan to have sexual intercourse (the maximum effect is reached within 30 to 120 minutes of taking the tablet). Absorption of the drug is delayed if you take it immediately after a heavy or high-fat meal, and you may need to wait some more for it to work.

Viagra - Drug Interactions

Viagra intensifies the effects of the blood-pressure lowering medications, as well as the blood-pressure lowering effects of nitrates, such as isosorbide dinitrate (Isordil), isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur, Ismo, Monoket), nitroglycerin (Nitro-Dur, Transderm-Nitro) that are used primarily for treating angina. Patients taking nitrates should not take Viagra. Inform your doctor if you are taking amyl nitrate, amyl nitrite, or butyl nitrate.
